In April we held a survey to see how people feel about our current logo and website design, and the results indicated that change is in the air. Since the Board and Partnership for Peace elections are coming up, we thought it would be appropriate to source a new logo and put it up for a vote.
This is a contest, the winner will receive a $100 AMC Gift Card and the honor of designing the emblem of the world's largest RPCV regional group.
The goal of the contest is to create a design that is distinctly Washingtonian. It should complement but not copy the Peace Corps logo, work in black and white, and look good online (particularly on Facebook and Twitter), on apparel, and on letterhead. Scalability is also a factor, the final product should look good at any size, from a 16px favicon to a 20ft banner.
You don't need to be a graphic designer to participate. You can create an image in any medium. Just give a compelling reason and vision for your design in the description. Keep in mind that we live in a jungle of stately insignia, so creativity is key.
- Initial entries must be emailed as a JPG to Chris Robinson at email@example.com no later than June 14 at 5 PM.
- Along with the image, include a brief explanation of your design.
- Logo must contain "RPCV/W" or the words "Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Washington, DC"
- Only Active RPCV/W members will be considered.
- Limit 3 entries per individual.
Members of the Board of Directors will select their 5 favorite designs and these will be placed on the Board ballot, which will be posted as a Google form on June 18 and accessed via the Member's Only section. Members may then vote for the winner.
Note that the winning design will be reworked by a professional, so you may choose to include in your description additional details of your vision that you were not able to render. The language you provide may be included on the ballot if your design is one of the 5 chosen by the Board.
Understand that RPCV/W retains the right to change or alter these rules at any time. The winning design will be subject to a final vote by the Board of Directors to become the official corporate seal of RPCV/W. By making a submission, you indicate that you have fully reviewed and are willing to abide by these conditions.
I've attached three entries for the logo redesign contest. They all take design cues from the D.C. flag's two stripes and three stars, similarities between D.C.'s flag and the U.S. flag, as well as the iconic Peace Corps star morphing into a dove. It should be noted that the curve of the flag is based on the curve of the Potomac as it borders D.C.
The first and third entry also pay homage to what will be the old logo's dove, which I see as breaking out of the circle, a little tip of the hat to the third goal in my opinion. The third design also seeks to emulate (to a very limited extent) dog tags, since sometimes people forget that there are many ways to serve your country, service is service.
Beyond some of the common themes, my biggest stylistic guideline was simplicity. These are logos that will be recognizable at any size, and have clean lines that can be polished by a professional and scalable. The colors are just ideas as the designs are meant to work in grayscale.
