Austen Huigens
Before joining Peace Corps Rwanda's TEFL Education Cohort 11, I was a Language Arts teacher in Harlem, The Bronx, Gary, IN, and Chicago's Roseland neighborhood. I also spent 3 years in a Head Start grant-funded early childhood education nonprofit in Lincoln, NE supervising their family engagement program, serving many immigrant and refugee families. I received my Master's in Education in 2009 through Teach for America in New York City.
My profession interests are centered around educational equity, literacy, diversity and inclusion, curriculum design, advocating for school policies thatĀ support students, targeted professional development and communities of practice, and home-to-school connections.
In my lesiure time, I'm hiking in a National Park looking for swimming holes and trees to climb.
