Who's going

RPCVs and ExPats, recently and not-so-recently returned alike, are welcome to share, learn and mingle at this unique event. RPCV/W and Nextpat will join forces to host this storytelling happy hour on Tuesday, May 14th at Wonderland Ballroom in Columbia Heights. Come grab drinks and some tips on how better to share your story after returning to the U.S. Nexpat offers courses and training on this topic, but is tailoring an exercise for our RPCV community free of charge during this event.

A message from our partner, Nextpat:
RPCV community - welcome back! As you may know, you have joined a vibrant community here in the DMV that is huge and growing. As RPCVs, you have had incredible experiences, learned unique languages, and gained perspective hard to replicate through other programs. You've also faced the challenge of coming home a changed person, during critical life moments for yourself and those around you, moments of great change and evolution.

So what should you think about before you join us for this event?
Were you so excited to move back home? To know how to navigate life, find things that you missed, meet up with your old friends and family? And when you returned, did you find that all of a sudden people weren't quite as interested in your stories as you expected? Did you find their stories rather mundane? Re-adjusting to home can be awfully difficult and there are moments that crop up even years later, when you miss your people from overseas, knowing they'd totally get this!

What to expect during the happy hour?
We'll be doing a short active listening exercise focused on your experiences overseas to help you find a voice & tell your stories in a way that engages others and hopefully keeps you engaged in their stories. We want to help you relate to more than just your PC tribe.

This exercise is similar to some of the tools in Nextpat's reorientation course (not nearly as intense as CBT, we promise!) and through the individual coaching we provide, focused on managing identity integration and creating a meaningful adventure back home. Nextpat helps you figure out where you've been, where you're going, and how to make that the best adventure yet!
